Holiday Dental Tips – Foods that Can Harm Your Smile

This isn’t just the season of sights and sounds, it’s also the season for wonderful holiday treats! Unfortunately, some of these treats aren’t so great for your teeth – and a few of the worst offenders may surprise you! While we’re not saying avoid these foods altogether, we do recommend enjoying them in moderation, making sure to keep up with your brushing and flossing routine.

Dried Fruit– Fruit is good for you, right? Dried fruit may be delicious, but it’s not good for your teeth. Dried fruits are sticky and contain significant amounts of sugar, which is a double-win for bacteria that causes tooth decay.

Popcorn – Here’s another food that might not be bad for your body, but not so great for your teeth. Popcorn is one of the worst snacks for your teeth because the parts of the kernel can easily get lodged between your teeth and gum line, allowing bacteria to build up and do its damage. Plus, it’s easy to accidentally bite down hard on an unpopped kernel and chip a tooth. Flavored types of popcorn, like caramel corn, are even worse for your teeth because the sugar-laced flavoring that tastes so good also sticks to your teeth, creating a holiday buffet for oral bacteria.

Stuffing – Why would stuffing be bad for your teeth? Stuffing is high in starch, which is converted to a form of sugar as you chew it. And because it’s a soft food, stuffing collects between the hard-to-reach surfaces of your teeth and won’t budge until you brush and floss.

Eggnog – Even if you don’t add alcohol to your eggnog, you’re still bathing your teeth in sugar. If you love eggnog, but want a version that’s healthier for your body and your teeth, dilute it with non-fat milk. Then your teeth are getting calcium and other minerals to counteract eggnog’s high sugar content.
